"Good, could be better."

date: December 21, 2009

When comparing to the usual flashes, I'm forced to give this a 10/10, but if I were to seriously vote, pinning this against your other recent works, I think this deserves a 7 out of 10.

I'll be honest, you made this in 4 weeks, and it shows.
This flash is a massive breakaway from everything you've done so far in so much as it changes the 'plot' completely. You've added in a narration, and... *spoiler* some form of human I assume? The breakthrough seems far to radical, too unnatural, as if you're making it up as you're going along (which I expect you are). But this diminishes the value of your flash.

Quality wise, there is far less attention to detail in this animation than in Waterlollies, and as we all know, quality is far more important than quantity. As you said yourself this only took you 4 weeks, which is - unless you spent every waking moment working on this flash animation - too little to achieve the quality that has become associated with your work.

There is also less experimentation here, no new camera angles, no innovation coding to create special effects, and to be honest it feels a little cheap. For example, I zoomed in with my browser and this meant I could see past the borders of the screen, so I guess this can only be viewed at the exact resolution you've provided.. And the bevel on characters, and the colour choice blending characters into their backgrounds (especially with little Bitey in the snow) all factors I picked up on the first time viewing.

Sorry to be negative, as I am a fan of your work and think you're very talented, but it just seems as if this was a little side project, or even half finished. Your other works show constant improvement, more experimentation in each and every flash, decent character development and not bad plot, but the emphasis (as it should be) firmly held on quality animation. Looking forward to your new work in the future (although I assume the conclusion to this part will be of near identical quality unfortunately), especially this long in production Brackenwood feature film.

"Great"

date: July 9, 2009

Not much of a storyline, character development, plot and tbh there's little animation as it's mostly just time lapse... but it's still great :D

I really like your style, the artwork is all really nice and it's very good to be spending time on the little details that most people won't even see.

I actually replayed your movie and zoomed into the village and was surprised to find that each and every building is individually crafted which must have taken aaaages, so nice work.

I think you'd do really well at level design with all that detail, so why not try and make a platformer or something? You'd be good at it ^-^

Author's Response:

Yea. I started this one thinking it would be a series of time lapses, but I like to have an element of story in my flashes... so it inevitably became a lil bit more like a narrative.

"Brilliant game"

submission: Magic Pen

It took me ages to complete it, but I finally did - no walkthoughs or tips of any kind.
I love the challenge of this game; when you enter some levels you think to yourself 'this is impossible!!!', but after a little experimentation you manage to nudge the ball towards the flags.
The music was a little irritating actually, but that was fine since you had the option to turn that off.
Well coded, even if it is just 'a clone' - kept me amused for quite a while.
